Annual Report 2026 Part 3 - Farm & Infrastructure

Aside from ensuring their emotional, spiritual and academic wellbeing, the shelter strives to ensure their physical needs continue to be met. The staff aim to meet the diverse requirements of the children nutritionally, and also ensure the upkeep of dormitories and basic amenities like toilets which would otherwise be considered luxury in this part of the world.

The children assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the steep roadway leading up to the estate, so their transport minibus doesn't skid here.

FARM

The Harapan Hari Esok Foundation has parcels of land approximately ±10 hectares on the perimeter of the estate, and this land is unoptimised as yet. The untilled land is partly filled with coconut trees and banana trees that are not well maintained, and the rest is wild forest.

At present, the children have activities to develop their agricultural skills—every Saturday the children harvest fruit from banana trees and durian trees. Ongoing forest-clearing work recently availed farmland of approximately ±3 hectares for the eventual planting of crops and fruiting trees. There are around ±4 hectares left to be cleared. This work is carried out by hired farmhands.

Currently, out of the 50 trees planted, ±40 durian, rambutan, avocado, and mango trees survived diseases, including ±200 banana trees. Therefore, we are in need of workers to maintain the livelihood of these trees as the children can only contribute through mass cleaning, known as “gotong royong” on Saturdays.

The multipurpose hall can accommodate up to 500 people. Here, a farewell event was hosted for Ofer Zega's brother, and was attended by Abigail's mother, Mr. Zega, Mr. Yurman and his wife.

BUILDINGS & RENOVATION

Yayasan Harapan Hari Esok has facilities and infrastructure in the form of buildings for sleeping and for children’s activities. At present, we can report that some are still suitable for use, some are usable but need repairs, and some are no longer suitable for use. Here is the list:

• 4 units of buildings for children’s residence. Each building unit consists of four rooms. Each room is equipped with bunk beds, wardrobes, study space and desks, bookshelves, bathrooms, toilets, and laundry areas. These four buildings are able to accommodate 100 children. At present, the condition of these buildings is: Block A is not suitable for use; Blocks B, D, and E are still usable but need repairs, because many beds, study tables, wardrobes, and ceilings are already damaged, and some bathrooms are also damaged due to blockage.

• 1 building unit designated for caregivers, workers, and volunteers, consisting of 10 rooms, equipped with bathrooms, toilets, and laundry areas. This building is still in good condition, but many of the beds and wardrobes are damaged due to age.

• 1 building unit designated for guests, consisting of 6 rooms, equipped with beds, work space, bathrooms, toilets, and laundry areas. This unit can accommodate 30 guests and is still suitable for use.

• 1 building unit for worship services that can accommodate 100 people, still suitable for use.

• 1 hall unit that can accommodate 500 people. This hall is equipped with a kitchen and also functions as a dining area, still suitable for use.

• 1 public toilet unit, still suitable for use.

• 6 run down buildings (built and donated by IOM), those  units for training in bread/cake making, agricultural product processing, and storage.

• 1 building unit for office use.

• 1 building unit for YHHE management when visiting KHHE.

• 1 building unit for security.

• 1 building for Kindergarten, that is currently operating with 30 students

The entire complex is already enclosed with walls and iron fencing. At present, its condition needs repair, because some fence pillars and walls have started to become fragile and parts of the wall have fallen; some sections were recently rebuilt with bricks where the wall had collapsed. In addition, the anti-theft wire on top of the walls is now all damaged due to rust, and some iron fences have collapsed due to fallen trees. 

The children who didn't return home for Christmas and New Year earlier this year were taken out to enjoy some of the local attractions - from a swimming pool to a scenic beach nearby (in the ensuing pictures).
