Annual Report 2026 Part 3 - Farm & Infrastructure

Aside from ensuring their emotional, spiritual and academic wellbeing, the shelter strives to ensure their physical needs continue to be met. The staff aim to meet the diverse requirements of the children nutritionally, and also ensure the upkeep of dormitories and basic amenities like toilets which would otherwise be considered luxury in this part of the world.

The children assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the steep roadway leading up to the estate, so their transport minibus doesn't skid here.

FARM

Yayasan Harapan Hari Esok owns approximately 10 hectares of farmland surrounding the complex. However, the land has not yet been fully utilized. Part of the land consists of coconut trees that are not well maintained, while the banana plantation is also in poor condition. The remaining areas are still covered with wild trees and grass, resembling forest land.

At present, the children of the orphanage participate in entrepreneurship development activities every Saturday by helping to clean and maintain the garden. This includes clearing around the banana and durian trees.

To date, approximately 3 hectares of land have been cleared, with the vegetation cut back and the trees felled. A further 4 hectares have been cleared of undergrowth, although the trees have not yet been cut down. All of this work has been carried out by hired garden workers.

In the areas that have already been cleared, approximately 600 banana trees have been planted, along with durian, rambutan, and mango trees.

The multipurpose hall can accommodate up to 500 people. Here, a farewell event was hosted for Ofer Zega's brother, and was attended by Abigail's mother, Mr. Zega, Mr. Yurman and his wife.

BUILDINGS & RENOVATION

Yayasan Harapan Hari Esok has various facilities and buildings that serve as accommodation and activity spaces for the children. At present, we report that some of these buildings remain in good condition, some are still usable but require repairs, while others are no longer suitable for use. They are as follows:

• Four residential buildings for the children's accommodation. Each building consists of four bedrooms. Every room is equipped with bunk beds, wardrobes, study areas and desks, bookshelves, bathrooms, toilets, and laundry facilities.

  Together, these four buildings can accommodate up to 150 children.

  • Block A is no longer suitable for use.

  • Blocks B, D, and E are still usable but require repairs, as many beds, study desks, wardrobes, and ceiling panels have been damaged. Some of the bathrooms are also damaged due to blocked drainage.

• One building is designated for caregivers, staff, and volunteers. It consists of 10 rooms, complete with bathrooms, toilets, and laundry facilities. The building itself remains in good condition, although many of the beds and wardrobes have deteriorated due to age and need replacement.

• One guest accommodation building consists of 6 rooms, equipped with beds, work areas, bathrooms, toilets, and laundry facilities. The building can accommodate up to 30 guests and remains in usable condition.

• One worship hall, with a seating capacity of approximately 100 people, remains suitable for use.

• One multipurpose hall, capable of accommodating approximately 500 people, is equipped with a kitchen and also serves as the community dining hall. It remains in usable condition.

• One public toilet block, which remains in usable condition.

• Six buildings used for bread and cake baking training, agricultural produce processing, and storage.

• One office building.

• One building designated for members of the Yayasan Harapan Hari Esok when visiting the on-site orphanage.

• One security post.

The entire complex is enclosed by a perimeter wall and iron fencing.

At present, the perimeter fencing requires repairs. Several fence posts and sections of the wall have become weak, and parts of the wall have collapsed. Some of the collapsed sections have recently been rebuilt with new brickwork.

In addition, all of the anti-climb security wire installed along the top of the perimeter wall has rusted and deteriorated. Several iron fence sections have also collapsed after being damaged by fallen trees.

Unfortunately, these repairs have not yet been carried out due to a lack of funding.

The children who didn't return home for Christmas and New Year earlier this year were taken out to enjoy some of the local attractions - from a swimming pool to a scenic beach nearby (in the ensuing pictures).
